what is the difference between a pound and a quid?

I'm watching some tv show about some Brits stripping cars for parts and I can barely understand 50% of what they are saying. Still a good show.

My mom wants to host a potluck-type lunch next week for herself, my sister, and me. She has been wanting to try new things and so she came up with the idea that we each have to make a dish from a different country/culture. I am going to Nicaragua in March, just for a couple of weeks. I'm fine with traveling by myself but I would prefer to travel with someone. It looks like it's much easier to find someone from the US/Canada than from my part of the world. Any recommendations/websites/communities to find a travel companion from another country?
